"Carls" The SOS is getting old. How about a picture thread?

I grew up with winter wheat planted after corn harvest, then beans drilled into the wheat field after wheat harvest, giving them 3 crops every 2 years. Winter wheat is now Gone With The Wind around here the past few years and it’s been replaced with canola.

I remember when it was called "rape." Around Calgary, AB there are thousands and thousands of acres....

I know canola is also known as rapeseed. I heard my grandparents talk about growing rapeseed when I was a kid and I reckon it was grown for industrial lubricants before cooking oil.

One thing I noticed last week was if I could find local wheat straw it was $6 a bail. There was so much wheat straw around here before you could barely sell it and most farmers didn’t mess with it. That’ll be a casualty of the loss of wheat production.

They have bred what to be shorter stemmed an produce more grain. Most of my Dairy customers are growing Triticale now because they get more tonnage when they chop it for silage. Wheat was just not producing enough tons.
