Duplex Loads

I’m going to be making up some duplex tss loads for the muzzleloader. I hate to shoot plastic and BP but don’t have much choice with TSS and a soft barreled old gun.

I’m going to be running 70gr 2FF Scheutzen, nitro card the a CSD 12 Wad modified to have Flite-control cut petals.

Then 1oz lead 5’s and 3/8oz tss 9’s or 10’s
Here is the question
I’ll have to stack nitro cards or cushion wads to get my stack height right.
Does lead or tss need to go on bottom?

I’ll figure out the shot card/buffer on top.
If the Flite control doesn’t work out I’ll split the wads and run a greased cushion over it like a SkyChief load.

I’ve been reading up. Everything says TSS on top for hotter core. TSS on bottom for more even pattern.

I guess the TSS maintains velocity longer. For sanity sake I’ll try tss on bottom 1st. Be a heck of a lot easier to load and not lose the sand sized shot through a bent shot card.

Posted this on KHF but thought I’d drop it off here. These loads should work in shell as well. Also I’ll be making mock Flite-control wads out of CSD not slitting them per “the shotgun scientist” based out of Kentucky.

This is what I’ve came up with based off research and my gun being rated for Max load of 89gr 2F and 1 1/4oz load. Also based off the bruises on my shoulder pushing 1 1/4oz pumpkin balls with 80gr FFg while patterning and the very dead squirrels from 60gr FFFg and 1 1/8oz of 5’s.

These are the 2 loads I plan to test.

Medium turkey load
70gr FFg
1/8” Nitro Card
1/8” Felt/cork Wad
Slit CSD 12 multi metal plastic wad cut down to column height
1/2oz #9 tungsten
3/4oz #5 lead
Overshot card
Should come out to 950-1000fps

Heavy Turkey Load “max I want to test”

80gr FFg
1/8” nitro
1/8” felt/cork
Slit CSD 12 cut down
1/2oz #10 tungsten
3/4oz lead 5’s
Overshot card
Should be 1050-1100 fps

I really wanted a 1 3/8 oz payload but I’d have to push it so hard to get ethical velocity. I backed off to a standard load due to additional components weight.

I’ll let y’all know how it does.

Decided to go with waxed cushion after nitro card over powder. Cutting down wads to get column height correct was a negative amount of fun but it was that or stack 16ga nitro cards. This way my tss is in a non slit portion of wad to protect barrel 4F4A11F9-C52F-4E01-8E7A-8FB2A3DA15A0.webp

Well 70gr will push a #10 tss and #5 lead hard enough to rip through a pear can at 37 yards and dent the back A288675C-2CFF-479F-85E8-693EF4F3FA44.webp

I didn’t get any real good groups on paper but eventually I figured out I was patterning low. I shot a few for posterity at the used plates.

Should hammer a bird at 35yds. The 9’s and 10’s both did great and shot cups worked. There is some plastic in barrel but it’s not “stuck” it’s just from sliding out not from melting.
